Banksy Prints have enjoyed a notoriety that is uncommon for underground artists. The artist’s works have appeared throughout the world and are known as Stencil Art because of the artist’s use of stencils in the creation. Legend indicates that the choice for using stencils was born from hiding from the police and noticing how quickly an art piece can be placed using a stencil.
The underground nature of the artist adds to the mystery and popularity of the works. What is known about the artist is that he was born in the UK in the mid 1970s. Beyond that, not much is confirmed, except that he does like pizza and often dresses in T-shirts with smudges of white paint, shorts and sneakers.
Contributing to his luminary status amongst underground artists, he apparently walked into the Louvre in Paris, France in 2004 and hung a resemblance of the Mona Lisa with a bright yellow smiley face. The staff quickly removed the artwork.
Several books containing photos of the works have been self-published by the original author. In some cases, people have tried to sell his works on location, leaving the buyer to wonder how the art will be removed, since they are typically applied to the sides of buildings, streets and various other public utilities.
